The friends were just as surprised as Steffen and looked around in amazement. The whole place was a big sham. There was rotten furniture and dirt everywhere. Outside the office, a similar sight awaited them. There was a greasy carpet on the floor and only a few rickety chairs in the waiting area.

Whether it was only because of the curse, Elea could not answer. No one remembered the director anymore. Over the years, he had been forgotten and now that the curse was broken, age was catching up with the institution. Everything rotted and crumbled into dust within seconds. The cells rusted and only the stone was spared from the aging process. Only the faded skeletons in the cells and corridors remained, but there was nothing left of the monsters.

They left the dungeon and were immediately surrounded in the abandoned chamber by soldiers who threatened them. Only when the guards saw who they had before them did they let the group pass. The moment the curse broke, all the palace residents were tipped off. This had brought the palace guards on the scene. They were to make sure that none of the prisoners escaped.

“Only skeletons left. Nobody’s leaving,” the dwarf grumbled, pushing his way through the soldiers. While the guards did their job and searched the dungeon, the friends returned to the dining hall. Hogrim didn’t miss the opportunity to pour everyone a large mug of ale. He cleared his throat meaningfully and looked around.

“Before we toast this great success …” he paused dramatically, “let’s thank Alyna and Steffen. Without you, this would not have been possible.”

Amid great laughter, they drank a big gulp. They had truly earned it!

Word of their success spread quickly through the palace. They were interrupted repeatedly. Nobles and curious people stopped by to congratulate the group on their success and title. It was actually a pretext. Everyone was dying to know if the corrupt director had really so much wealth. Disappointed, they departed when they heard that the wealth was an illusion. The stream of visitors slowly subsided as the friends retreated to Steffen’s room.

They emptied their pockets there and neatly divided the loot into two piles. The things that the dwarf should sell and the rare items. They divided the little gold immediately.
